Not a blog more like another pier banyan tree, a place to come & sit for a little while & wait for something fun to happen. A place for all the greezers, candyasses, Halloween egg throwers, former Publix bagboys & dirt bike riders to kill a little time until Halloween. Just like the good old days, wait around for a couple hours until you could find some geezer to buy you beer...

Wow - If you removed all the time that I spent talking on those phone booths, I can't imagine how young I would be! Great photo - great memories!
ReplyDeleteNo doubt. Gosh, remember when a phone call needed to be made, and you weren’t at home next to your land line, well, you had to find a phone booth! Cell phone junkies can’t comprehend.
ReplyDeleteI remember I had to call my folks from those very phone booths to tell them I lost my little sister during the swamp buggy parade! OH NIGHTMARES! I finally found her sweet little self on the corner of 8th St and 5th Ave, enjoying the parade, not a care in the world and she didn’t even realize she was lost! I didn’t know if I wanted to knock the crap out of her or hug her to death!

This picture brought back a lot of memories for me and my wife. My wife worked in that building starting out in 1973 as an operator (remember those?). She still to this day works for the phone company working her way up through the different jobs.
ReplyDeleteI remember as a pre-teen, going up those stairs with my mom when she went to pay the bill. I really liked the stonework on the front, the flat-rolled aluminum ornamental railing, and the 5 concave tiled/bricked panels on the tower. A few years later, when I was "cruising" to and from the Pier, I would think how cool the building looked at night with the 5 lights shining down the facade.
ReplyDeleteHey wasn't the "Western Union" right there too? W.U. was the only communications link out in the aftermath of "Donna". The Red-Cross had my family listed as missing for a couple of days. My mom had to send a telegram to relatives "up north" to let them know we hadn't been swept away.

If I remember right it was the one of the only places in Naples during the early 60's that had an elevator. My friends and I would ride it up and down, all three floors after school. That is untill they told us to get lost. The other public elevator I remember was across the Beach Store that went a whopping 2 floors. Rode that one silly!
ReplyDeleteI've got a vintage, in box, ZIPPO lighter with Intercounty Telephone & Telegraph and Danny Dialtone on the face. Any interested buyers? George.glb17@hotmail.com.
