The Old Dock On Naples Bay

I'm shooting in the dark here because it was a little before my time but you can see the water tower down by the pier off in the distance. I'll scoot down to the shuffle board courts & try to get the dirt on this photo.

PS: This is Crayton Cove I've seen it in history books.

  1. How come that looks like the Mercantile Bldg on 3rd St. S.???? I'm lost on this one.

  2. I am pretty sure that this is taken from what would now be the city dock at the east end of 12th Ave So. That old hotel existed at Crayton Cove a long time ago from what I understand. I have no idea when it was torn down. There were a number of businesses in that area at one time. That is where the Wynn family started their grocery business also before it was on 5th Ave.

The water tower in the picture was the orignal water tower for the town long before the water tower that was behind the old city hall that many of us were familar with.

  3. I got it now. You can see the the Hotel cupola/tower in the center rear of the picture when blown-up to full size.

    Thanks BH...

  4. Whoever built this building must have been the same person who built the Mercantile Building on 3rd. I had to do a window count to see they were not the same building. The side roof lines are the same.Where did you get such an old photo?

  5. I have old photos but they don't interest me much. All the local history folks beat that stuff to death. I don't trust whats been passed on over time no telling whats added to make it seem more interesting. I try & stick with the time I've spent here that way I'm not BS'd a lot I know that history very well.

At first glance, my first thought was the Mercantile Bldg also, however, the water and the boat confused me, then I thought maybe somewhere in Everglades City? But probably Anonymous is correct about Crayton Cove. Right?

  7. I would have to say yes LPHG. Like I said in my other comment, if you look down the street when the pic is full size you can see the copola/tower on the old Hotel on the far west end of of 12th Ave. S. On the right side of the pic is where the "Dock" at Crayton Cove" sits now.

    Very interesting....

  8. If you look to the left you can see the drive around circle with the bushes in the center, which was always there. This is the City Dock. (Nice website you have.)

  9. The Bayview Inn, a grocery store and hotel incorporating Naples' first pharmacy, made these people feel at home. The Bayshore Hotel held a pool hall, dance floor and large dining room, as well as Naples' first newspaper owned by Vernom Lamme, (The Naples Transcript). At the Dyches Dry Goods Store, "Sugar Boy", a tame deer, made children squeal with delight.
