  1. Maybe in the NE quadrant, the Weisenborn's Naples Armature Works (the little white building)? Not sure.

  2. Good knowledge!

I strained my brain trying to recall that one. I remembered the sign, but got the name wrong. It was adjacent to the Redi-mix driveway just east of Prather's.

  3. The Weisenborn spread on Estey Avenue was the Oz of East Naples. The only walled estate I can think of in the kingdom, went all the way from Estey back to the creek (Rock Creek). My grandfather built a triangular plywood hut in his Royal Harbor backyard, at the end of Marlin Drive, right on the bay, for us grandkids to camp out in. Very shortly after it went up and was painted yellow, the neighbors, especially the Audubon Society director who lived across the canal, complained, called zoning, and the police. I was friends with Robert Weisenborn, an East Naples Middle School compadre. His dad, owner of the Armature Works, came over with a flat bed truck and moved it to the Estey Oz, back by the creek. It was there for more than ten years.

  4. Wow! Nicely done Mr. Encyclopedia! I walked those streets a million times and if I tried what you did it would come out as... ah, a gas station... then that cafeteria... then the bridge... right?
So, thank you for putting so many of the names with the picture! Between Brookside's photos and your memory, we are all in for a great ride here!

  5. The Pancake House (between the two Gordon River Bridges) hosted many Naples High School Junior/Senior breakfasts. It was the norm during split session classes (juniors, seniors went to school from 6:20am-11:40am freshman, sophmores 12:10pm-4:40pm)to skip first and second period class for a tasty stack of pancakes. Generally we would be busted halfway through breakfast by one of our infamous truant officers (Bill Brumfeld,Ed Magero,Noel Sheckler)but it was worth it at 7:20am.

Thanks for the recall on those three little places between the Gordon River Bridges SH.

  6. Bill Brumfield (sp) was more likely to join you for breakfast, and sometimes he would pick up the check. He's do the same for you at lunchtime at the Viking Tavern, and beers there at night. He would seriously bust you if you went to Burger King for lunch. He actually told me to go to the Viking, "since you live there, anyway. And catching you there would cause too much trouble." He tended bar on weekends at the Chinese restaurant near Brookside Billiards. He knew my home life was poor, and that I wasn't eating regularly. So if I dropped by the restaurant he'd set me up with some sweet and sour entre at the bar and sneak me beers. I had hundreds and hundreds of detention hours that I was supposed to serve. One night at Viking he told me if I would serve just one hour in The Pit that he would cancel all the other hours. I told them I just couldn't do that. Point of personal honor. He said he understood. The golf tournament at next summer's NHS Class of 1975 reunion at the Beach Club has been named for him: The Bill Brumfield Golf Classic. It's open to all NHS grads. Those other two, Magweirdo and Shecklarus the Hunchback would have been more comfortable working the guard towers at Shawshank.

  7. Actually John....I have to agree with you on the Bill B. persona. He was a great person and a great soul. I personally have good memories of the man. And a few funny stories I should tell, but I wont digress at his point.

  8. Brumfield was a great soul. Not a malicious bone in him. Glad you think so, too. On Facebook, find the picture and stories Jim Fox has about him, particularly Brumfield as chaperone for the senior class cruise to the Bahamas. Turned out Brumfield knew all the best bars on the islands.

  9. You omitted Dyches Dry Goods on the NW side of 4 Corners between Parks and the Phone Company. Percy Lundquist owned it for many years. She and her husband Harry were long, perhaps lifelong residents of Naples. Their nephew was "Cousin Vern" of Ft. Myers TV show for children in the 50's.
