Not a blog more like another pier banyan tree, a place to come & sit for a little while & wait for something fun to happen. A place for all the greezers, candyasses, Halloween egg throwers, former Publix bagboys & dirt bike riders to kill a little time until Halloween. Just like the good old days, wait around for a couple hours until you could find some geezer to buy you beer...

Looks like it was a Sunday, about noon, during the winter season.
ReplyDeleteYes, Virginia Sunshine Market used to be closed on Sunday, that’s why there are no cars in the parking lot (or on the street for that matter). Folks either went to church or slept in on Sunday morning and there just wasn’t a lot going on . . . Sunday afternoon either; it was just a nice lazy day; unless you were water-skiing on glass (early) in the channel to Little Marco, fishing or checking out the beach or the Pier . . .
. . . just not a lot of traffic back then.
Note the shadows falling to the north (winter) and they are nearly vertical (indicating noon); this picture feels like mid-winter to me.
West side of 41: Cities Service gas, Dewey Polly Realty, Sunshine, Phillip’s 66 gas, Tom’s Standard Oil station, Flaming Fountain.
East Side of 41: Jim’s (and then) Frank’s Sunoco (the Panipinto brothers), Stewart Motel (right?), Stahlman Landscape (used to be Ingram Chevrolet), ?? Realty (brick wainscot and gold lettering on sign), Dog ‘n’ Suds (Hinton Family, right?).
Kind of neat to see the railroad tracks (can’t hardly tell where they used to be in recent aerial photos).
Who know what year the new “Collier County News” building opened? It’s not quite finished in this picture but it would sure be a good indicator of year.
Fuller industries (concrete) in the lower left; they made their own concrete blocks too; but not on Sunday . . . .

Seagate Homeboy, I remember when about the only place open on Sunday in Naples, was the Party Pantry on the North side of town.

The Naples Daily News moved to Central Avenue in August of 1969.
ReplyDeleteWhit's Sis.
Thanks WS. That would put completion and C.O. (certificate of occupancy) of the new building somewhere in the spring/early summer of 1969 thereby allowing ample time for equipment installation followed by employee migration in August. It appears as if I was pretty close on my winter estimate in this case 1968/1969
ReplyDeleteThe car wash on 10th looks brand new, and I can’t remember . . . is Danny’s Auto Electric (Danny Slavin and Walter Fredrickson) in this picture? I’m thnkin’ on the west side of 10th St. N. between 1st and 2nd Ave. N. with the 2 side doors facing the alley? (Whew. I think I just fried my brain . . . or at lest my voltage regulator).

And don't forget the "Flaming Fountain" in the upper right corner. Does anyone have a night time picture of the infamous flaming fountain?

At 945 Central Ave, just behind (or East)of Franks Sunoco is my dad's office building. Has one car parked out front. Also had a record store, small knick knack store and others located in the building, I remember riding my bike over there from St Ann after school to dad's office, then going to Franks and getting a soda. Thanks for the picture and Charles the commentary is right on, thanks also.
ReplyDeleteJust a note, Doctor's office in the center left of photo should be Law Offices of Walter Sorokoty (my father. Thanks
