  1. Great pictures! Shows how some things never change. These same spots still flood like that to this very day when there is a heavy rainfall. Just one of the hazards of being at sea level. People always wonder why does it always flood like this. Well water runs downhill and guess what, we are downhill.

The thrid picutre showing the police and fire stations is good. If you look close you can see what appears to be some of the fire fighters out playing in the water. Actually the old police station is still standing. When the Police moved over to Goodlette Rd the Fire Department took over the entire building for a number of years. In the mid 90's most of the building was torn down to build the current fire station but the west end of the building where the original Police station was located was left standing. It has been refurbished so it looks very different but it is still the same building.

  3. Great pictures!

I can almost see Austin Evans at Naples Liquors, Jim or Frank Panipinto at the Sunoco station, Joe La Rochelle at Hertz (pre-NPD).

That last picture is taken from the corner of the old "Teen Club" (Community Center) parking lot. (Props to Mr. Breeden and Randy Davis)

In 1970, I rented an old house 1/2 block southeast of the old police station; summer flooding caused the water to rise over my first porch step.

A walk over to the fire station coke machine would get you a soda for a dime.

I remember fire chief "Pearlie" Riner driving that old Jeep station wagon.

This is all just a small slice of "The Real Naples" that I know and love.

  4. Thanks for bringing up the Coke machine at the fire station. That Coke machine has always been a fixture there with many neighbors using it. I worked at that fire station for many years and remember all the different people stopping by and buying a Coke. To this very day if you stop by the new fire station that is now there you will still see a Coke machine in the truck bays.

  5. These are really excellent! One day I will have to return, roll up my pant legs like the old days, and wade on through!

  6. I remember driving through the intersection of the Trail and Central Ave. and getting swept away by some of the cars that were causing wakes. I was in a 1972 Datsun sedan at that time. It was kind of fun losing control like that but, thinking back, I pretty much lost control all the time.

  8. I waited for two hours when they dropped the bottom out of the old water tower....it was fantastic, they cut it in half, dropping each side separately, it floated down, banging on the legs like a leaf, and made a huge dust whoof. They were going to build city hall, i think.
